About the Run to the Rose

The Run to the Rose is a Group 3 race for three year old horses, held each August at Rosehill Racecourse in Sydney. This event is hosted by the Australian Turf Club and takes place under set weights plus penalty conditions. The Run to the Rose is run over a distance of 1200 metres for $125,000 in prize money.

This event attracts horses on their way to the Group 1 Golden Rose, which is the richest event held during the Sydney spring racing carnival. Even though this race only began back in 2003, it has quickly become one of the most important lead up races for the Golden Rose Stakes. Previous notable winners of this event include Mentality in 2006 and El Cambio in 2007.

After the Run to the Rose and the Golden Rose, horses may go on towards events such as the 1400 metre Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield, the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, the Caulfield Guineas, and the Group 2 Roman Consul Stakes at Randwick Racecourse. A number of winners and place-getters from the Run to the Rose have gone on to big things both in Sydney and beyond

In recent times, 2009 winner Denman went on to victory in the Golden Rose, with 2010 and 2011 winners Squamosa and Smart Missile both managing second place in the Group 1 event. Helmet, who was third in 2012, also finished third in the Golden Rose, along with winning the Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield during the Melbourne spring.

The Run to the Rose is a new inclusion on the Sydney racing calendar, starting out back in 2003. It was a Listed event for the first four years and became a Group 3 event in 2007. El Cambio took out the race in 2007 under new Group 3 status. In the 2012 edition of this race, Pierro won ahead of Your Song in second place and Epaulette in third.
